The popular manga/anime series "Attack on Titan" has attracted more than a little attention in the last couple of years, spawning video games, live action movies and now, a board game. . The project is a collaborative effort between Cryptozoic Entertainment (North America-based) and Don't Panic Games (Europe-based), who are planning to officially release the game in 2016.
Without spoiling anything significant, the plot of "Attack of Titan" revolves around a civilization which has been forced to live in cities behind huge stone walls because of a race of huge, hungry giants waging a seemingly inexplicable war against them. The giants, known as titans, are very difficult to kill and only seem interested in eating the humans within the city walls. The human's main defense against the titans are the Survey Corps, an elite group within the military specifically equipped and trained to take down dangerous enemy.
Involved in the game's design are two big names: Antoine Bauza and Ludovic Maublanc. Bauza is known for his work on "7 Wonders" and "Hanabi." Maublanc is known recently for "Cash 'n' Guns." All of these are unique, award-winning games, which is certainly getting people interested in what these designers' take on "Attack on Titan" will be.
Not much has been revealed about the game yet, but we do know that it will feature a unique mechanic where a player will control a titan, which will be represented by a vertical board element which the other players will need to climb in order to defeat.
The game was demoed this past weekend at Anime Expo in Los Angeles and Japan Expo in Paris. Player Theory will let you know as more information about this game is released.
