Blizzard announced today that beloved actor Robin Williams, who was discovered dead yesterday of asphyxiation in his Calif. home, will be memorialized as an NPC in “World of Warcraft.”
Williams was a self-reported gamer and even famously named daughter Zelda after “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.” He also played the “Warcraft III” RTS and “World of Warcraft,” although his identity online was never leaked.
The effort to memorialize Williams developed through a Change.org petition that garnered 10,975 supporters in the one day since the announcement of Williams’ passing:
Chadd Nervig, technical game designer, followed up with the petition on Twitter:
“World of Warcraft” has 19 other memorials dedicated to real world people or events, including Ezra Chatteron, a brain cancer patient who was created as an NPC through the Make-a-Wish Foundation in 2008, as well as Michel Koiter, a Blizzard artist who passed away in 2004 from heart failure.
