Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita announced today to Kotaku that an enhanced version of "Final Fantasy VI" will be released this winter for Android and iOS. This game will use graphically updated 2D sprites like those used in the "Final Fantasy V" mobile port earlier this year.
Tokita said that “Final Fantasy VI” will be “basically like a remake of the original,” but that there will be some core changes. The focus of the changes appears to be toward streamlining character progression.
The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for ‘Final Fantasy,’ and ‘VI’ will be the same. For instance, grinding was an issue, and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices, the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is.
This will be the newest installment in Square’s “Final Fantasy Legacy” series, a continuing project to update and remake games from the sprite era. The next "Legacy" game slated for release is “Final Fantasy: The After Years,” a story that takes place after the events of “Final Fantasy IV.” Rather than updating sprites and sprite animation, “After Years” will be a full 3D remake of the Game Boy original.
Tokita added that these games will not necessarily wrap up the “Legacy” series, and that releases from the PS1 era and beyond may be developed if “Legacy” proves successful.
We are aware that we have tons of ‘VII’ fans. We have ‘VII’ fans in our own company. If this ‘Legacy’ project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with ‘VII’.
Although there has currently been no mention of price for “VI,” this year’s “Final Fantasy V” mobile port sells for $15.99 on both platforms.
