Every Nintendo console needs a Mario game. That almost feels like it should be a law. Well, the Switch is finally getting one, and it looks like it's been more than worth the wait. The plot of "Odyssey" is similar to every other Mario game - Mario has to ultimately save Princess Peach from Bowser by collecting moons to power his airship (called "Odyssey") so he can travel to different worlds. "Super Mario Odyssey" has everything we expect in a Mario title with a new mechanic that looks amazingly fun. Check out the gameplay trailer below:
If you didn't have time to watch the trailer, let me summarize what you missed: Mario can be a frog. Or a car. Or a jolt of lightning. Or a TYRANNOSAURUS REX. Or anything, it seems. "Super Mario Odyssey's" new mechanic, in which Mario tosses his hat at enemies (and objects?) to become them, feels like a dream. Mario games all follow the same general "platformer" formula, and as fun as they are on their own, it's always great to see how Nintendo adds a little something different to each game to spark a different way of thinking or how a player approaches an problem in-game. Mario's new 'hat trick' in "Odyssey" is sure to create a ton of interesting solutions to the game's puzzles and really make the title itself one of the series' most memorable.
"Super Mario Odyssey" is set for release on the Nintendo Switch on October 27th of this year.
