After it's world premiere at Gamescom today, the newest "Overwatch" character short has been released to the world. Entitled "The Last Bastion," the short features the little death robot that everyone loves to hate - Bastion.
In this Wall-E-isque short, we find a damaged and forgotten Bastion that gets re-activated by a little bird that we know as Ganymede. Bastion tries to continue his mission from years prior during the Omnic Crisis (rise of the machines), but keeps getting distracted by the beauty of nature and little Ganymede who is happily building a nest on Bastion's shoulder.
A loud woodpecker triggers Bastion into going turret mode and shredding a good portion of the forest where he believes there is an enemy attacking. After the "danger" has passed, Bastion thinks he has killed his yellow bird friend and sadly continues on his mission.
He emerges from the forest, outside Numbani - the target of his attack. In the field before the city, there are hundreds of destroyed Bastion-units. Bastion taps into the memory core of one of them, and we are treated to an abrupt and intense scene change - one of the biggest battles in the Omnic Crisis. The only hero we see here is Reinhart, who destroys a line of Bastions and then shields some nearby soldiers from a spray of bullets. Bastion is in battle mode when we return to the present and he starts marching across the field toward the peaceful city.
And then Ganymede returns to Bastion, eager to finish the nest with Bastion's help. After an internal struggle, Bastion calms down and happily returns to the quiet forest with Ganymede.
Once again, Blizzard has outdone themselves with a gorgeous short that tells a fantastic story, and it does it with barely a word being used. "The Last Bastion" is definitely one of the more beautiful shorts that Blizzard has done so far, and definitely the cutest. I think we're all about to see a lot more Bastions being used in the game after the release of this short.
Dun Dun Boop Boop.
