Italian website, Lega Network, released an image of a possible cover for "Destiny 2," claiming that the title would hit stores Sept. 8. There was no year associated, but it did state that "Destiny 2" would be a PlayStation exclusive. Whether that exclusive is time-locked or permanent is unknown.
"Destiny 2," if the leak is true, would be a sequel based on the Bungie blockbuster shooter/MMO, which was the same development company behind the infamous "Halo" series. It released Sept. 9, 2014. The game itself was set in a science fiction universe in which society has advanced technologically to the point of space travel. "Destiny" received high ratings in general, although its acclaim was not universal. while Game Informer gave the game an 8.75, GameSpot and Polygon gave it a mere 6, which is a big deal in a rating system which sets the bar for "unplayable" at 5.
When "Destiny" was released, it had serious problems especially considering the genre - no in-game chat function even to assist in group forming, lack of story, and relying too heavily on grinding for rares. Additionally, while the game was available on multiple consoles, it never made it to PC, which was potentially an issue in grabbing the attention of MMO players of other games. While Bungie did promise more story, players had to wait for the DLC "The Dark Below." However, the game was also praised for its maps, its graphics, and building on an already well-loved IP in a new environment/genre.
While the leak may end up being a dead end, "Destiny 2" was announced as a possibility as far back in 2014, when the original released.
Work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full game release. Eric Hirshberg, Activision CEO
If the leak is true, hopefully the Bungie developers (or their Activison publisher) have learned from the mistakes of the original and can build a better game as a result. If not, they'll likely attract the same fan base who already loved the series enough (and to be clear - for valid reasons) without exciting new audiences.
