It’s arguably a highlight of the event and a reason so many thousands of gamers make the trek to Texas with their own rigs. It’s time for the the QuakeCon Bring Your Own Computer (B.Y.O.C) LAN party!
QuakeCon opens up a large part of the convention center for gamers to set up their own PCs, an area they can connect and with some of the regular attendees and reconnect with both friends and enemies from past conventions. Entrance to the event itself is still entirely free, but if you’re looking to test just how good your skills really are, you’ll need to be looking for a spot here but it’s going to require an investment. We’ll get to the prices later, but be aware it’s an incredibly popular part of the event.
Yesterday, we saw the official and sponsored tournaments that run, but if you don’t get a chance to sign up for them or were not fortunate enough to get an invitational to the master (like me), fear not, because the community is here to help. Attendees and teams alike set up their own unofficial tournaments for people to compete in. Only a few have prerequisites for entry, but many simply ask you to bring your PC, the game, and a lust for digital glory.
The big one this year, although not an Id Software game, is the "CS:GO" tournament. There is a registration process for taking part in this one, but it goes to show that the community is here to game, have fun, and holds no grudges when it comes to getting into the competitive spirit.
Even if the packages sell out, QuakeCon is giving people the opportunity to win BYOC seats. If you check out the @QuakeCon Twitter and the QuakeCon Facebook page, you can find more details on how to do this. They’ll be up for grabs in social media giveaways and contests, and event partners will have some to give away.
As all seats will be on sale and given away prior to the event, so you’re not going to be able to get a space onsite or on a first come, first serve basis as you had been able to in the past. The gaming area becomes busy when the event gets going, so it’s key that you're there and you know where you're going to be before things get even more hectic.
You can pay for a space if you want to eliminate having to win your entry. Don’t worry though, because you don’t just get a table to set up on, they come with their own preorder goodies. These packages all have a limited availability, so check out the QuakeCon Website to see if the package you want is still available.
