Rockstar Games made good on their promise to release new details about the latest installment of the "Grand Theft Auto" series today by revealing a new multiplayer component.
“Grand Theft Auto” is a well-established series that allows players to wreak havoc on a city in an open-world map. Among other things, they can steal cars for transportation, raise health by sleeping with prostitutes, and rob banks. “GTA” has received flak in the past for the adult nature of its games – including both sex and violence, epitomized with the “hot coffee” mod scandal back in 2004. With the multiplayer announcement, you can now look forward to doing all these things and more with 15 of your closest friends (or strangers if that’s what you prefer).
Playing with others is, of course, optional.
“Grand Theft Auto Online” allows players improved features from the previous installments of the game. According to Rockstar:
Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, and taking part in missions, jobs, and activities to earn reputation and cash to open up new opportunities to rise through the criminal ranks.
Access to “Grand Theft Auto Online” is free with every retail copy of “Grand Theft Auto V.” “GTA V” launches Sept. 17 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. “Grand Theft Auto Online” follows closely behind with an Oct. 1 release.
