Sega announced at San Diego Comic Con, in addition to "Sonic Mania," that they will be releasing a new 3D "Sonic the Hedgehog" game for 2017.
Though little was shown, and none of it being actual gameplay, it appears that Sonic will be facing off what looks like a time of destruction as robots have destroyed a city (at least this one anyways). Classic Sonic will also be joining Modern Sonic again, but there are reports that this technically isn't "Sonic Generations 2," despite it looking like it and being from the same team.
Interesting to note is the line "Join the resistance." For the most part, the main games for Sonic haven't dealt with a resistance before. In terms of comics and shows, however, the "Sonic SATAM" TV series has had a story where Sonic and his friends were Freedom Fighters fighting against Dr. Robotnik who turned the world into ruin. Whether this is a sign where the Freedom Fighters, i.e. Sally Acorn, Bunny Rabbot, and more make their first debut in a main "Sonic" game isn't known, but we'll see in the future. After all, different timelines isn't much of a thing if there are two Sonics running around.
The tentatively titled "Sonic 2017" is set to release Holiday 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the NX (or whatever Nintendo's system will be called when they officially reveal it).
