Today, perhaps in reaction to the small leak from Target, Warner Brothers have announced a sequel to the 2014 game "Shadow of Mordor" - "Middle-earth: Shadow of War." Of course, the announcement comes with an awesome theatrical trailer to set the mood.
"Shadow of War" takes place between the events of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' and will once again feature Talion and the spirit-ally Celebrimbor as the game's protagonists. And, of course, a new Ring of Power to try out.
What made "Shadow of Mordor" such a memorable game was the Nemesis System it invented - a mechanic that gave boss-enemies personality, and had them remember past fights with the player. These bosses would learn the player's tricks from past defeats or victories (earning plenty of scars in the process) and be ready to take Talion on again with new special abilities or defenses. With "Shadow of War," the game's developers are promising to grow on that system, with the very environment itself something that the player can come to change. They are also introducing a "Follower" system, where NPC allies can learn and grow with the player, giving even the smallest of characters a personal story within the game.
And, from the trailer, we learn that Talion will likely to have to deal with the Nazgûl and maybe a Balrog or two.
All in a day's work for a legendary Ranger.
"Middle-earth: Shadow of War" is set for release on August 22nd of this year, on PS4, Xbox One ((including Project Scorpio), and PC.
