Speaking with The World Folio, Sega Sammy Holdings President and CEO Hajime Satomi stated that both Sega and Sony are teaming up to produce a "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie.
Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved. Hajime Satomi
It isn't known how the movie will incorporate live-action and animation together. That could mean something like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," which has 2D animation, or something that involves 3D animation, similar to the fan-made "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie.
The article/interview also went into what Sega Sammy had planned for the future and insight on their business, such as a little bit on their time in the home console market and how pachinko machines are more strictly for a Japanese market and not outside.
