Early this morning, at the Telltale Games twitter account, a little picture was tweeted with a very familiar logo and seemingly innocuous quote from "A Dance with Dragons," the fifth book in the 'A Song of Ice And Fire" series by George RR Martin, which most people probably know better as the fantastic HBO series "Game of Thrones."
Since it was announced that Telltale Games was going to be working on its own story within the "Game of Thrones" universe late last year, we have had nothing but silence on the topic. Some people even began to believe that they had imagined the announcement, casting it off like some kind of three-eyed raven in a weird dream, but there appears to be life and truth in the game announcement yet!
"...Trackers and hunters sworn to Deepwood with clan names like Forrester and Woods, Branch and Bole."
-George RR Martin, A Dance With Dragons
That is the quote that Telltale teased us with, and they made special point to highlight the name "Forrester" in the tweet as well. The quote is talking about clans that are (or, were) loyal to the Stark family and lived around Deepwood Motte. Deepwood Motte is part of the North, but was captured by Yara (or Asha, if you're a book purist. The Telltale game seems to be following the HBO series rather than the books) Greyjoy, giving the Greyjoys a solid foothold in the North (only a few hundred miles from Winterfell). While seemingly unimportant in the grand scheme of things (the capture of Deepwood is only talked about in passing in the show and in the books), it seems that the Telltale game might have some focus on a member of the Forrester clan, perhaps dealing with life under the control of the Greyjoys or perhaps as part of some kind of resistance. I feel like its important to note that the Forrester clan is never seen or really talked about in the HBO series or the novels, so Telltale is really entering some uncharted waters.
There is a second part of the tweet that is also a little bit telling. The hashtag "IronFromIce." The Greyjoys are often refered to as "Ironborn," as one of their little sayings has to do with "paying the Iron price" for things that you own, which is a homage to their days as raiders meaning that you don't pay gold for things that you want, you pay through it with iron (a sword), as in, killing someone to take what you want. Deepwood Motte is situated on The Bay of Ice, as well, which might be where the "Ice" in the hashtag comes from. Perhaps we will see the actual battle of Deepwood Motte, alternating perspectives between a Forrester and a Greyjoy as they either defend their home or take the Motte. Or, it might just be a reference to the Greyjoys becoming harder as they sit upon the captured Deepwood Motte and winter begins to set in (Winter is always coming).
Personally, I feel like a story that covers both perspectives the Deepwood Motte conflict - a Forrester and a Greyjoy - would be the most interesting story to cover. It would also be a good homage to the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books, which the series are based upon, with each chapter of the series being dedicated to another character's own perspective and events.
We hope to hear more about the Telltale Games "Game of Thrones" game by the end of Pax Prime. So far, there are no other details and no release date even slightly hinted at. We can only hope that Telltale Games isn't making this game on an old DOS machine using WordStar 4.0 - I don't think I could take it.
