This weekend at Minecon, Telltale Games released an official trailer for it's take on the Minecraft universe - "Minecraft: Story Mode."
Telltale also provided us with a little synopsis of the game's story.
Players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, as portrayed by actor Patton Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order is the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong... something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.
While there is little doubt in Telltale's ability to make an interesting game, the response to the trailer has been fairly neutral. The fans of Minecraft don't like how it seems to deter from the open-world, free-roaming nature of the game, while fans of Telltale Games are having trouble finding interest in the blocky, overly-cartoon-y look that the trailer portrays.
Its my opinion that Telltale is taking a lot of cues from the Lego Movie that came out last year. They're staying loyal to the look and visual style of Minecraft but are taking considerable liberties with things like facial animations which, given the emotional weight a lot of Telltale stories have, seems pretty appropriate. It will be interesting to see how serious of a tone this game will end up having, or if Telltale will ease down to appeal to Minecraft's younger fans.
There is no official release date, except for a vague "soon." When it does finally come out, it will be released on PC, Mac, PS3, PS4, XBox 360 and XBox One.
