Excited about EVO 2014 but don't really know all the crazy terms you're gonna hear and what they mean? No worries, Player Theory has you covered with some terms you need to know if you're going to watch EVO 2014:
- Salty: You're really angry or emotional about a loss.
- Bodied: To be completely destroyed or dominated.
- Feeling Yourself: Super confidence after winning or dominating a round of match.
- Footsie Game: Both players are at a neutral state and using normal punches and kicks to try and get the first hit.
- Punish: To take advantage of an "unsafe move" or a "whiffed" attack.
- Hype: Super excited about the events or matches.
So these few terms will be heard as you watch the matches from the announcers. This will help you stay more in tune with whats happening in each match. This next set of terms will help you understand even more but not just when watching. These terms would actually be good to know if you want to get into playing the games yourself:
- OTG: Almost always heard in "Marvel vs. Capcom" games. A move that hits a characters Off the Ground(OTG.)
- Kara Throw: When you cancel a character's normal move to add range to a throw.
- Overhead: Most moves can be blocked when crouching except for an "overhead." It will hit a crouched, blocking opponent.
- Option Select: This can get a little confusing, but it's when you can buffer two moves at once but let go of a button depending on the situation. Result is to make only one of the two come out.
These are just to name a few. If you're hype for EVO 2014 and this is maybe your first time watching (or even if you just needed a refresher on terminology), this list should have helped. EVO 2014 starts July 11 and ends July 13. If you can't be there live, you can check out the many streams that will be available on Twitch. And be sure to follow Player Theory for news of the event as we receive it!
