Creative Assembly, the development team behind the Total War series, is stepping out of the mostly historically accurate safe zone that they built their name in and are venturing into a whole other universe of high fantasy. Announced today in a stunning cinematic trailer, the next game in the Total War series will be set in the popular Warhammer universe.
Total War: Warhammer
While we don't see any gameplay in that trailer, we can assume that Creative Assembly will follow the traditional gameplay that Total War is known for - huge empire maps and massive, real-time battles where the player can account for every single unit. The only difference this time is that rather than human empire vs human empire, "Total War: Warhammer" will feature magic spells, monster mounts and the races from the Warhammer universe (announced are the Greenskins, The Empire, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts). Here is the official synopsis:
The valiant Karl Franz marshals the men of the Empire, seeking to unite the fractured elector counts under a banner of strength against their common enemies. Hungry for the vicious brutality of combat, the Greenskins flock to the tribe of Grimgor Ironhide; Orcs and Goblins alike filled with an insatiable thirst for carnage.
High King Thorgrim orders the stoic Dwarfs forth from their mountain strongholds, marching to vengefully right the grave injustices dealt to them over the millennia. Yet the motives of the Vampire Counts under Mannfred von Carstien are shrouded in murderous secrecy, his armies raised from the rotting ranks of the dead.
And while the Old World becomes torn by betrayal, war and the unleashing of unfathomable power, a greater threat still whispers in the winds from the north. The fabric of reality itself begins to rend and buckle…
It has also been announced that "Total War: Warhammer" will be the first game in a trilogy, which promises to make this game a huge, spectacular experience.
