Wizards of the Coast is gearing up to release the third installment of the “Theros” expansion to the wildly popular “Magic: The Gathering” trading card game. Primarily based on the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, “Journey into Nyx” adds an additional 165 cards to the ever-growing catalog of “MTG” cards. As with many other expansions, the new set introduces a few new elements that add new layers to the game.
There are several new mechanics being introduced in “Journey into Nyx”:
- Constellation mostly appears on enchantment creatures. It gives them the ability to trigger an effect listed on the card each time that it (or another enchantment card) enters the battlefield. Some effects include making a target creature unblockable or giving bonuses to attack/defense.
- Strive gives players the ability to increase targets for spells by tapping additional mana.
- Bestow is a new ability found on enchantment creatures that allows you to pay a different mana cost to cast the spell as an aura spell that enchants a creature, giving it abilities and/or other bonuses.
- Heroic triggers the listed effect whenever a spell you cast targets the card bearing the ability.
- Monstrosity is an activated ability that gives a number of +1/+1 counters to a creature depending on whether or not the creature is monstrous (i.e. if the ability was activated previously). Many of the creatures that have this ability also have triggered abilities that take place after the creature becomes monstrous.
As with previous “MTG” expansions, “Journey into Nyx” adds several new creatures. Some of these are mythic rare, dual-colored, and indestructible. That's right; they are gods. The god creature type was introduced earlier in the “Theros” block. These legendary enchantment creatures aren't considered creatures unless your “devotion” (or total number of shared color mana across permanents you control) matches or exceeds the number listed on the card. Their abilities trigger whether or not they are considered creatures.
Launch weekend for “Journey into Nyx” is scheduled for May 2-4. Upon its release, it will be considered officially sanctioned for constructed format play.
