It was announced today that "Wildstar," a popular scifi/fantasy MMORPG that was released last year, will be going free to play this Fall. According to the release: "Players can acquire the game, create an account, login and play through everything the game has to offer without spending any money, so yes, we do mean free." Along with the written announcement, we also got a pretty exciting cinematic to remind people exactly what "Wildstar" is.

Why the change? In a recent interview with MMORPG, creative director Chad Moore said this:
We don’t have the IP to draw in box sales on an unknown quantity. We know we have an excellent world, and an excellent MMO. But what we’ve learned the hard way is that people aren’t as ready to spend a box fee and a subscription on something they don’t recognize. We want to get the game in front of as many people as possible, and the best way to do that these days is to remove the barrier to entry.

As with most "free-to-play" games, there will still be plenty of options to purchase things in-game to get special benefits or items, but nothing overly game-breaking. The developers of "Wildstar" seem set on making sure that their game doesn't fall into the "pay-to-win" category. There will no restrictions on players that don't have a desire to use real money in the game - they will be able to access any area that a paying player can access.
While there is no exact date set for when "Wildstar" will make the jump to free-to-play, we do know that it'll happen sometime this Fall.
Once the game is free, do you plan on visiting the Planet Nexus?
